Although the deep sea may seem remote from our everyday lives, it plays a vital role in regulating the climate, storing carbon, and supporting biodiversity. As one of Earth’s least explored ecosystems, it still holds countless species and ecological processes that scientists are only beginning to understand. Yet growing interest in deep-sea mining is bringing unprecedented pressure to these fragile environments, raising urgent questions about the potential loss of biodiversity before it is even discovered. Following the screening of How Deep Is Your Love, this lecture by Watcharapong Hongjamrassilp explores why studying deep-sea life matters, what we still do not know about the ocean’s depths, and what deep-sea mining could mean for the future of marine biodiversity and ocean ecosystems.

Assistant Professor Watcharapong Hongjamrassilp, Ph.D., known as “WiN,” is a Thai biologist and National Geographic Explorer. He currently serves as Assistant Director of the Aquatic Resources Research Institute and as a faculty member in the Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. WiN received his M.Sc. in Marine Biology from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, and his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His work spans marine biology, animal behavior, ecology, and evolutionary biology, while also promoting public engagement with science through lectures, digital media, popular science articles, and a wide range of creative projects. Through his research and outreach, he seeks to share the wonder of the natural world with audiences of all backgrounds.
